First up, the Kamikaze Hearts from Albany, NY. These guys have fantastic instrumentation and some amazing four part harmonies (esp. this day and age). They have two singer/songwriters (at least) which I believe is a good sign and an innovative mandolin player that I would love to be able to emulate. I do want to post some tracks from their albums in the near future but I am going to introduce them with my favorite track from WOXY 05/01/06.

Pavement or the Guardrail

One of the Best

It was a crazy day yesterday here in real life. I have always felt that Steve Earle is one of those hardcore, to the bone, no messing around, kind of singer songwriters; up there with Neil Young and Bob Dylan. Then he choose to collaborate with arguably the best band in bluegrass right now. They are certainly very tight and old school but also progressive enough to let everyone in. You put this combo together and look out. The first seven songs on this CD are unparalleled with anything else I am listening to. Check out how he opens the record:

Texas Eagle

On this one Steve and Ronnie switch; Steve on mandolin and Ronnie on guitar.

Harlan Man

Solid Air

This is a tremendous album that tends not to be immediately accessible. But through repeated listens, the darker, muddier textures come out and are excellent aurally. John is a very good guitar player and kind of spooky singer. He is very deftly backed by the incomparable Danny Thompson on bass. There are a variety of other musicians as well. I am not going to post my absolute favorite track; I'll save that for later. Nor am I going to post the track Eric Clapton covered. I am going to post this trio in order; consider it "meat off the bone". If you have not heard this album or heard of this album, it is past time you did. Go do your homework. As my entries are starting to sound the same, I am going to use the liner notes from Johnny Rogan in 1997.

The last song on Side A, with Chris Hillman on mandolin:

Pretty Boy Floyd

"McGuinn returns to his folk days to resurrect Woody Gutherie's portrayal of the people's outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd. The result is one of the best arranged songs on the album, with fiddle, banjo, mandolin and stand-up bass each contributing to the effects."

As that isn't what the album sounds like, check out the first song on Side B:

Hickory Wind

"Gram Parson's' greatest moment on record was his second lead vocal contribution to this album. Co-written with former Submarine Band member Bob Buchanan, the composition was completed during early 1968 on a train ride from Florida to Los Angeles. The alluring hickory wind serves as a powerful image for Parsons' bittersweet nostalgia, as he imagines as Edenic childhood of simple pleasures like climbing trees. During successive verses, he reflects on the pursuit of fame, the curse of wealth without spiritual satisfaction and the perils of city life. What really makes the song, however, is Parsons' aching vocal, set against a superb steel guitar backing, whose whining combines with his yearning voice to create a mood of unbearable poignancy."

Dueling Mandos

This is a great acoustic album; just about every track features two mandolins. Emmylou sings and plays guitar.

Evangeline

Long Time

I lost a my copy of this album 3 1/2 years ago and hadn't heard it since. These guys are a phenomenal band. It is way too bad that they got labeled a swing band because that was really just part of their shtick. When we used to see them in the small clubs, they were basically a punk band with the sickest horn arrangements. I swear I have never had as sweaty a dance night at a club as I did when these guys were full speed ahead. And with Steve Perry at the wheel, they never had an off night. They could mix punk, ska, rock, funk, swing, anything into a set or even into one song. MC Large Drink was a kamikaze Cab Calloway. Dana on trumpet was just amazing and Dang on bass was ...

Equus

That song is sooo funky. That bassline is so low its dragging through the gutter. The fuzzed up lyrics are classic. Many some good memories. Here is some more versatility from the same album sans swing.

Johanna Of The Spirits

Jimi Thing

This is an often overlooked album in Ricki Lee Jones discography. There are no real hits on it; it is more of an acoustic jazz album. And it is this fact, the reason why I enjoy it. Plus, she has , in my opinion, a great cover of Jimi Hendrix's Up From The Skies. This track has Robben Ford on acoustic Steel String guitar (rhythm), John Leftwich on Bass, and Michael O'Neill on acoustic Nylon String guitar (lead). Check out the guitar runs towards the end of the song. For me, this is a classic.

Up From The Skies

As it is called Pop Pop, I will throw one more gem up. This track has the same bass player, Walfredo Reyes on brushes, and the great Joe Henderson on saxophone. I had heard that she plays mandolin as well as her primary instrument fiddle. There is no mandolin on this album but there is a really talented band including: Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz, Viktor Krauss, Kenny Wollesen, and Chip Taylor. The other thing I was bummed about was that none of the tunes were written by her. She co-wrote a few songs and did one cover. This album is kind of like ambient americana, country with atmosphere. It is a very good listen and is hard to single out one song. The title track is strong but I just can't get myself to post just the first track to turn someone on to an album. That said, here is the cover, written by Dirk Powell.

Waterbound

You Can't Resist It

This is a super fun album. It goes from big horn arrangements down to the whisper of a vocalist. The band is impeccable. Victor Krauss on bass, Andrea Zonn on fiddle, Francine Reed on duet vocals. There's horns, string, and backing vocals. I was checking this out last night on my way home and some thing just caught me on this track. Tweaking the arrangement would make it a cool bluegrass tune even. Also check out how low the baritone backup voice can get. So low, it more a bass voice.

You Can't Resist It

Congratulations

I have actually heard of and respect three of the five artists nominated for Best Country Instrumental for the 2008 Grammy. I do not own the other two albums (Andy Statman, Russ Barenburg) but I own this one:
The Greencards are nominated for Mucky the Duck. Written by Kym Warner, their mandolin player. It's a cool little bluegrass type acoustic jam. It has the great Bryon Sutton on guitar.
The tune is off the Viridian album, which in my opinion is alright. I enjoy about half the songs. It is an acoustic affair somewhat like a mature Nickel Creek. Kym Warner is a very good mandolin player. The Greencards are Carol Young on vocals and bass and Eamon McLoughlin on fiddle. On this album they are joined by Bryon on guiotar and Larry Attamanuik on drums (from Jerry Douglas' band, among others).

Mucky The Duck

This tune is more of what the Grreencards sound like:

River of Sand

oh, and I have to credit Lizwalker1975 for the great Mucky Duck photo.

UHF

This is a really great band from Portland, OR. I do have to admit I am a little biased because we are friends with the drummer but they guys are very tight at what they do. And what they do is great Brit psychedelic pop. The two Leff brothers are excellent songwriters and singers; and Matt Johnson on kit and Jeff Nelson on bass. I am not sure who does all their graphics (I am sure Matt has at least a hand in it) but this is top notch, too. I am surprised that these guys are bigger than they are. Here is a taste from their latest; I'll get more up soon.

Disconnected

Recovery.....

Ended up spending the day yesterday with my sick four year old. Tone it down a little. This little ditty is an excellent cover of the great Richard Thompson. It is performed by X with help from David Hidalgo of Los Lobos. I am a big fan of John Doe but don't entirely care for Exene. This is rough cut and raunchy; kind of what this song deserves. For you headphone fanatics out there, Hidalgo is in the right ear and Tony Gilkyson is in the left. This appeared on the Beat the Retreat CD from 1994. They are a quartet with a cello and bass on the low end and a banjo and vocals on the high end. The way they sonically mix the two and the way they arrange traditional Old- Time music is really exceptional. To top it all off, the main soloist is the cello player and he is phenomenal. Keep your eyes out for this group coming to your town.

This is there first album, Hop High. Literally every single track is excellent. They are really hard to classify; which I consider a compliment. I never saw them live when they were a quintet as they are here on this album. This album is really fun and hard to pin down and always fun to revisit now and again. I was friends with Liza , who is the lead singer and lead guitarist. She is a wonderful talent. A remarkable singer; I think of her as a sultry Bonnie Raitt. I remember when we lived in T-town together and she would play some Raitt covers just her and her acoustic guitar. She does 95% of the guitar work here I believe; at least, she does all the electric duties. She has a great funk rhythm style. As it is hard to pin this group down, I am throwing a few songs up to enjoy.

Keep On Movin

Bring your Love To Me

Song 34

And my personal favorite:

Sunrise On The Road

Simply Incredible

This album is amazing. Two world class musicians playing in a duo format. An immaculate recording. Just some incredible playing. Timing, tone, spirit, this disc has it all. Mike Marshall is one of the best mandolin players right now and Thile is no slouch either. Their fingers just fly. For you headphone fans out there, Thile is in your left ear and Marshall is in your right. The album opens with

Harvest Tune (Marshall)

All the songs are spectacular on this release. I particularly enjoy:

Stranded in Kodiak (Thile)

Then the second to last track, just blows the record out of the water.

What a Blast! (Marshall/Thile)

Man, I wish I could play like that. Even play half as well as that! This album is fantastic.

Get On Board

I need to get everyone on board with one of my favorite guitarists of all time. All with the same band: John Coltrane on tenor, Philly Joe Jones on the kit, Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. This was just an amazing group that effortlessly worked together. Talk about tight. I have all four albums and they are fantastic. But back to last night, I had Steamin', Cookin' and Workin' on rotation last night. I was sitting there and this first tune from Workin' just blew me away again. Coltrane isn't even heard from but the rhythm section impeccably strolls along as Red sets the scene.

Tone and Control. Miles throws out a clinic. This would apply for all artists and musicians. This is an example of complete control of your tone. It is an excellent folk/roots/americana deal. I believe he grew up in Massachusetts and moved to New Mexico where he currently resides. His first album is great and has a few Boston area players on it. What I truly like is his off beat songwriting and the fact that the album has touches of Old Time instrumentation. The whole album is solid but I will throw up my favorite. This track has Aaron Goff on mandolin and Mark Lever on tuba. Just the whole mood of the track is exceptional. And I always love the old school tuba replacing a bass. Throw that mandolin in there and I am hooked.

Enjoy.

Eden's Brow

Ain’t been to heaven but I been told

Well, I admit I am not a huge fan of Bruce (sorry, Jonathan) but I do own two albums: Nebraska and We Shall Overcome.

The latter isn't even really a Springsteen album as it is entirely covers of Pete Seeger songs. This album has a loose feel, with off-the cuff solos and jangly kitchen sink rhythms. It fun to Hear him yell on the key changes and who gets to solo next. It has that Springsteen enthusiasm too. There are a number of tracks that are excellent but it is the late 9, 10, 11 tracks that I think are best. Here is number nine:

Eyes On the Prize

This is one starts slow but builds momentum. It twangy, but the chorus kicks in and so do some 'Nawlins horns. Then mellows out meanwhile keeping Bruce gritty-ness throughout.

Enjoy.

Post Script Rant: Bruce contracts 18 musicians for an Old-Time record and doesn't hire one mandolinist?

Far From Enough

This is a pretty ironic title considering all the threads this album is going open on this here blog. Kind of exciting, in fact, at least for me. So to get right to it: this is a fantastic album that came out a few years ago. It is Victor Krauss' first solo album and he is Alison Krauss's brother. Victor has been a supporting a number of musicians before this project; too many for me to mention here besides a note that he is Lyle Lovett's bassist for a while (maybe still is).

I was reminded of this album from all the talk of the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss duets album that has come out recently. I guess I wasn't as skeptical as most on hearing about this collaboration. This is due to the Robert Plant cover that Alison sings on this album. I really like it and Alison's voice has always just slayed me. There will definitely be more posts with her involved in the future.

Big Log

But this album is so much more than that. I can't just leave you with that sample. Bill Frisell on guitar and Jerry Douglas on dobro really shine here. Any project with either of these guys will get me psyched. Bill adds so much texture to a project and songs take such great twists and turns when he is on board. Jerry Douglas is just a phenomenal talent and has played in a multitude of projects. Check out this fun little song:

Here To Be Me

We still haven't hit what this album is totally about and without posting the whole album I never will. Victor is so good at creating mood and context. There will definitely be more nuggets from all four of these artists in the future.

For A Good Time

Joy Kills Sorrow

This is a really cool band out of the Boston area. They have recently changed lead singers but this band is incredibly talented. As a buddy mandolin player, I especially enjoy the work of Joe Walsh. He does some terrific rhythm work and has very tasteful precise solos. Adam, on banjo, is extremely skilled and keeps the whole thing on track. And Matt, on guitar, has just won the National Flatpicking Championships recently I believe. There are accolades for whole band that a simple web search will reveal.

I have a bunch of their tunes and they are all so good and inspiring (at least for me). I have been listening to this a lot lately on the commute. Incredible vocals on all. I am putting up two older ones to start. I have more that I might post later. One tune has some great bass bowing on it. Check out the sedate but accurate chop of Joe, too.

Oh, I do need to add that both tracks are not a great recording. They start to break up at the very high reaches of the vocals; but I still think they are very listenable.

Barbara Ellen

Handsome Molly

The Rosewood Thieves

This album, I should say EP, came out last year but the beauty of being a new blog is that I have a ton of things to revisit. The Rosewood Thieves have just issued their second EP and thus the post. I wouldn't characterize this as Americana so much but it is very reminiscent of 60 folk -rock . I see Bob Dylan ( though he is kind a in everything), Beatles, ... i don't know , a few others; i guess it has all been said before. Every track on the EP is good. So here is a taste.

Back Home To Harlem

The Word

I read elsewhere that The Word have a couple of shows coming up and I had to dig out that CD. This is a really cool band or spin off, whatever you want to call it. John Medeski of MMW, the North Mississippi All-Stars, and Robert Randolph all cooked up together delivering a gospel album. There are some super cool jams on here. Medeski keeps the mood going and I am surprised he doesn't get more solos. The real fireworks are the dueling slide guitars of Robert Randolph and Luther Dickinson. This is great stuff.

At the Cross

Waiting On My Wings

Dem Boys Pt. 4

The show is Sunday and the rate I am going this will be the last post till then. I frickin' love the Gourds. They have a great laid back vibe. There lyrics are very creative and enjoyable. They can rock it out and slow it down. You think they are just a rowdy sloppy bar band from Texas and then you really listen and they are totally in control and professional. They have two strong personalities as song writers. All these mixes come together in a ying yang; sweet and sour thing and it is just fantastic.

Pickles

High Highs and Low Lows

Need To Be Fair

I need to get a couple of these up that have been simmering (while I have the time). I go hot and cold on Rhonda Vincent. Sometimes I really like her (and her band) and sometimes I like her band. Her voice is something special and she is a competent mandolin player. I am going to throw out there two tracks. The first is a great mandolin and fiddle duet (something I would love to hear more of) with Hunter Berry on fiddle and Josh Williams on mandolin. This is great stuff but again really her band and not Rhonda.

Son Drop In

Now to be fair I have to post something by Rhonda. This is a great tune with good harmony. I guess not harder but more time consuming and time is one thing I do not have a lot of. I am still new to the whole Uncle Tupelo thing which includes all the off shoots, etc. I guess I had my head in Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors at the time. But going back to their catalog has been rewarding. I haven't touched Son Volt and Wilco yet, but with NPR in fund raising this Uncle Tupelo CD has been playing in my car. This is a good song (that even my band should cover).

Still Be Around

Dem Boys Pt. 3

I really should have gotten this up yesterday; but alas, it is todays post. He has a new version out performed by a quartet with Tony Rice on guitar, Sharon Gilchrist on mandolin , and Bryn Davies on bass. This is a fantastic recording and some incredibly tasteful solos. Tony Trishka wrote the liner notes and I'll let him take it away: "Peter weaves a lovely, chord based guitar break, egged on by Tony. Sharon's mellifluous turn is a study in tonal beauty. Then Tony burns the studio down with a musical statement that will be the talk of acoustic circles for years to come. If I counted correctly, he takes nineteen passes through the progression, spinning off one ear-popping fusillade after another." This is going to be a fantastic show. It is a little interesting that the Dropkick Murphys are playing the same night in the same building but that just means there will be a lot of drunk people having a lot of good times.

It's interesting the Gourds do not get talked about more. They have the groove like no one else and they are all excellent magicians (!), no I mean musicians. Great lyrics and personalities. I could just go on and on. This tune off of their newest album is really cool. Normally, I am a Kevin guy but Noble Creatures is really a Jimmy album. He is freakin en fuego on this LP. Hopefully, I can get some more tunes up before next weekend.

All in the Pack

Keeping the drive alive

I do not have any back story on this one, but this is a great band from Canada called Nathan. I guess I do have a thing: I hate it when a studio recording fades out in the middle of a great jam.

Got A Thing

Revisiting

I am psyched that this tune still holds up after all these 20 some years. This song rocked out back when I was in high school and (maybe it’s just me) it still kicks ass. The band is sweet; REMs rhythm section (before they got famous) and David Lindley just smoking through some lap steel guitar. This is great stuff. REM rocks out; there is no pop around. Classic lyrics from a great song writer: “Now I’m doing my own laundry and I’m getting those clothes clean.”

OK, enough; check it.

Detox Mansion

Wonder, wonder

I wonder how all this works; just diving right in....
